As an overview, ‘Writing from Corinth toward the end of his third missionary journey in AD 57, Paul wrote Romans in part to win support for his anticipated mission to Spain.’ The situation in Rome during this time was very hostile between the Jews and the Romans. In fact, so much so that twelve years later the Romans destroyed the second temple that was rebuilt by Ezra and Nehemiah.
The church of Rome was thought to be founded by Jews who had come to faith shortly after Pentecost. Though, it is a highly debated topic to where others believe that the founder was the Apostle Peter. The book of Romans was written on the occasion of spreading the Gospel of Jesus Christ and how salvation through Him brings unity among both Jew and Gentile.
The Purpose of the book of Romans was laid out ‘over the course of sixteen chapters, Paul incorporates many of his favorite theological themes, including sin, death, law, justification, participation (“in/with Christ), the Spirit, and ethnic reconciliation.’ These are all key factors in living a Christian life as well as what Jesus taught. Paul was heavily influenced by the second Temple era due to the persecution from the Romans and the Jews but, ultimately from his encounter with Jesus.
Overall, at that time Paul was writing to Christians in Rome and Christians everywhere. He was writing from Corinth on his way to Spain to introduce himself to the believers there. Throughout his writing he is trying to emphasize how all are welcome to the faith through Jesus Christ to which he paid a heavy personal price.
